Participants in a university AI workshop compare a lesson activity, software workflow and reading notes while a student records questions.

OpenAI expanded its Academy on September 21, 2026 with learning paths for developers, leaders, educators, and college students. They join the existing Apply AI at Work pathway, and course badges are awarded after learners pass the relevant assessment. The announcement organises training around roles rather than a single general introduction. For educational institutions, that creates an opportunity to ask which decisions and practices each group needs to develop.

The educator and student pathways have different purposes. OpenAI describes educators planning activities and reviewing generated material against learning objectives, while students practise tasks such as organising study, reviewing drafts, and preparing for applications. These are intended course activities, not demonstrated effects on teaching quality or student attainment. A school or university should inspect the actual tasks before deciding how the courses fit its programme.

Role-specific training can be useful because a teacher, a technical developer, and an institutional leader may encounter the same system from different positions. A teacher must judge whether an explanation serves a lesson. A developer needs to understand how an application behaves when information is missing. A leader must decide which activities deserve support and how the organisation will learn from experience. Shared terminology helps, but the assessment should reflect these different responsibilities.

A university could combine a common introductory activity with separate applied tasks. Everyone might examine one flawed AI response and identify what needs checking. Educators could then revise a lesson activity, students could review a draft against an assignment, and technical staff could document a failure case in a small application. A later discussion would reveal which concerns are shared and which require specialised expertise.

Anthropic's Claude Academy framing emphasises intentional delegation and the skills people should continue to practise. Google's AI Educator Series connects Gemini with problem solving and inquiry, and its recent announcement adds partner-specific credit pathways. Compared with these resources, OpenAI's new portfolio offers another way to organise training. The relevant comparison is what learners practise and demonstrate, not simply how many courses or badges a platform lists.

Assessment deserves particular attention when a course teaches people to work with an assistant. A polished artifact can be produced without a clear understanding of its limitations. An assessment can therefore ask the learner to explain one rejected suggestion, identify a missing source, or adapt the workflow to a changed requirement. Those tasks make judgment visible. Learners should also be able to explain what they could not verify. They also provide feedback that remains useful when the product interface changes.

Institutions should leave room for different starting points and for learning beyond the provider's examples. Staff and students can bring a real task they have permission to use, document how assistance changed it, and discuss what remained their responsibility. The Academy expansion supplies a structured set of entry points. Its local value will depend on whether participation leads to more thoughtful choices and demonstrable capability in the work people actually do.

Product news: OpenAI adds Brazilian Portuguese to its educator course, keeping teacher judgment at the centre

AI Product and Learning Report

OpenAI announced a Brazilian Portuguese version of AI for Educators on October 15. The course offers a new language route into professional learning about classroom AI use. This report considers how a teaching team might turn that opportunity into a concrete lesson-design exercise: examine a generated question, explain the instructional choice, and test the activity against students' needs. Course availability is a product announcement, while changes in teaching quality and student learning remain outcomes to investigate.

Teacher case: A Malaysian lecturer uses oral defence to assess students' judgment in Gemini-assisted coding

AI Product and Learning Report

An October 5 teacher account from Universiti Putra Malaysia describes students using Gemini in Colab while defending their modelling choices in verbal interviews. This October 13 report considers the assessment design, not a proven improvement in attainment. OpenAI's software-testing cases and Anthropic's project coordination provide context: when AI can produce working code, educators need evidence of what students understand, can troubleshoot, and can justify in a changed situation.
