Formative assessment is a planned, ongoing process in which teachers and learners elicit and use evidence to move learning forward. It is not a particular quiz, app, worksheet, or grading category. An activity becomes formative when evidence gathered during learning changes what someone does next. The process connects an intended learning goal, evidence of current thinking, and an adjustment that helps close the gap. Students participate by understanding the goal, examining evidence, using feedback, and increasingly directing their own next steps.
Strong formative practice begins with clear learning goals and success criteria grounded in the discipline. Teachers then design questions, discussions, observations, demonstrations, drafts, or exit tasks that can reveal how learners are reasoning. A correct answer may hide a misconception, while a carefully chosen explanation or contrasting case can expose it. Evidence should be broad enough that quiet, uncertain, multilingual, and disabled learners can show their thinking. Techniques that collect a response from every learner are often more informative than relying on volunteers, but the task still needs to distinguish among plausible understandings.
Interpretation must lead to action. A teacher might revisit a prerequisite, compare two anonymous responses, change the example, form a short support group, or advance to a more demanding application. Feedback is formative when it is actionable and the learner has time to use it. Comments that locate the current work, clarify the goal, and identify a manageable next move are more useful than praise or a score alone. Peer feedback and self-assessment can expand this process when learners understand the criteria, practice giving evidence-based comments, and work in a respectful culture where emerging ideas are safe to share.
Frequent testing is not automatically formative. If scores are recorded but teaching and learning continue unchanged, the loop remains open. The same task can be used formatively during instruction and summatively later, depending on purpose and response. Evidence on formative assessment is encouraging, including a large English secondary-school trial of a professional development programme, but results depend on implementation, subject, timing, and what teachers do with the evidence. No single routine works equally well in every classroom.
In education, a useful cycle can fit inside one lesson. Clarify a goal, ask learners to predict and explain, display a small range of responses, and decide together what the evidence suggests. The teacher chooses a next move, learners revise or try a parallel problem, and both check whether understanding changed. AI tools can help group response patterns or propose follow-up questions, but teachers must verify interpretations, protect learner data, and notice minority reasoning that an aggregate may hide. Formative assessment closes the loop through responsive action. Its value lies not in collecting more data, but in making timely, disciplined changes with learners while improvement is still possible.
