Industry news: Lowe's AI assistants illustrate the difference between immediate guidance and lasting workplace learning

OpenAI published a Lowe's case on September 25, 2026 describing Mylow and Mylow Companion, assistants for customers and store associates. The company account emphasises conversational project guidance, including voice access for staff while they help customers. This September 27 report examines the workplace-learning question raised by that design. The case describes use and business experience; it does not establish that employees developed lasting expertise because an assistant answered their questions.

Receiving help during a task and learning from that help are related but different outcomes. A worker may complete an unfamiliar activity successfully while still being unable to explain the decision later. Another may use the answer to connect a new case with existing experience. A training programme should decide which of these outcomes it expects and what evidence would show that the expectation was met.

Vocational educators can explore the distinction with a simulated customer conversation. A learner first clarifies what the customer is trying to achieve, then consults a supplied knowledge resource or an assistant. The learner must explain which information is relevant and what remains unknown. An instructor can change one detail and ask how the recommendation should change. This tests whether the learner is interpreting the situation rather than repeating the first plausible response.

The case also draws attention to experienced workers. Expertise does not mean knowing every product or procedure, and an assistant may be useful when someone moves beyond their usual area. Training can therefore focus on recognising the limits of one's knowledge and identifying when another person is needed. A confident answer should not remove the option to ask a colleague with relevant experience.

Anthropic's September small-business expansion packages recurring work into reusable workflows, while Gemini's established learning tools offer guided support and practice. Compared with OpenAI's retail case, these examples show different ways of making information available at the moment of need. The educational design question remains whether the person can understand, question, and adapt the guidance. Convenience alone cannot answer it.

A workplace pilot could examine several forms of evidence. It might record whether a question was resolved correctly, whether the employee could explain the reason, and whether they handled a related case later with less help. Customer experience and business measures can be considered separately. The comparison should use tasks of similar difficulty. This would avoid interpreting a commercial result as proof of learning, while still recognising that timely guidance can be useful for the work itself.

The practical lesson for colleges and employers is to build a small reflective step into assisted work. A learner might note what they asked, which part of the answer they checked, and what they would do differently next time. The record can be brief and focused on the decision. Lowe's provides a current example of AI guidance embedded in everyday service; educators can use it to ask how immediate support becomes an opportunity to develop judgment over time.

Product news: Claude's small-business expansion connects reusable workflows with entrepreneurship training

Anthropic

AI Product and Learning Report

Anthropic's September 15 update expands Claude for Small Business with workflows, integrations, and training activity. Reported here on September 19, it offers entrepreneurship educators a concrete set of tasks to examine, from proposals to recurring reports. OpenAI's agent tools and Gemini's educational training provide comparisons. The learning opportunity lies in defining a useful workflow, checking its inputs, and retaining the business decisions that a person must understand and own.

Product news policy brief: China's Ministry of Education added 27 programmes to its 2026 vocational education catalogue, including humanoid robot engineering, embodied-intelligence computing and digital-twin fields. The catalogue signals workforce priorities but does not prove that every institution has launched the programmes or that graduates will achieve better employment outcomes.
