Retrieval practice means deliberately bringing previously learned information to mind instead of only looking at it again. A learner might answer a question without notes, explain a concept from memory, sketch a process, or solve a problem after the worked example is removed. The defining action is attempted recall. A quiz can create retrieval practice, but testing is not the goal by itself. The instructional purpose is to strengthen usable knowledge and show what still needs attention.

Research comparing retrieval with additional study has repeatedly found that successful recall can improve later retention. One explanation is that retrieval strengthens and reorganizes the routes used to access knowledge. It can also make future learning more effective by clarifying which ideas are secure and which are incomplete. The immediate experience can be misleading: rereading often feels fluent because the material is visible, while recall feels harder because support has been removed. That difficulty can be productive when the learner has enough prior learning to make a serious attempt.

Effective retrieval practice varies in form. Free recall asks learners to produce what they know with little prompting. Cued recall provides a question, image, key term, or partial structure. Recognition asks learners to identify an answer, which usually supplies more support. Prompts should match the desired future performance. Remembering a definition may require a different prompt from explaining a causal relationship or choosing a strategy in a new problem. Retrieval should recur after some forgetting and across different contexts rather than appearing once at the end of a unit.

Feedback matters, especially after an unsuccessful or incomplete attempt. Learners need a chance to compare their response with an accurate explanation and then retrieve again later. Low-stakes conditions reduce the temptation to treat every error as a judgment of ability. Teachers should avoid turning retrieval practice into rapid-fire grading that rewards speed, public comparison, or isolated facts at the expense of reasoning. The technique is also not a substitute for initial teaching, worked examples, discussion, or supported practice.

Digital and AI tools can schedule prompts, vary examples, and invite explanations, but they should not quietly reveal the answer before retrieval occurs. Generated questions also require review for accuracy, ambiguity, and alignment with the curriculum. Learners can also rate their confidence before feedback, which helps separate secure knowledge from guesses and gives teachers evidence for the next instructional decision. Later recall should confirm the change. A useful sequence is simple: learn with appropriate support, remove some support, attempt retrieval, receive informative feedback, and revisit the idea after a delay. The aim is not to make learning feel difficult for its own sake. It is to help knowledge become available when notes, hints, and familiar wording are absent.
