Criteria should describe what competent performance looks like and include evidence of explanation, application, or transfer when those qualities matter. Teachers also need to distinguish a temporary performance boost from retained learning. Later checks can show whether learners remember and use the knowledge after support has faded. Some contemporary programs use the phrase teaching for mastery, but that broader curriculum tradition should not be assumed to implement Bloom's complete formative, corrective, reassessment, and enrichment cycle.
Research reviews have generally found positive average effects, but results vary with implementation, subject, duration, assessment design, and comparison conditions. The Education Endowment Foundation currently rates the evidence security for mastery learning as low, which is a reason for careful local evaluation rather than rejection or overclaiming. Practical constraints matter. If assessments are vague, corrections arrive late, or every learner waits while a few repeat the same activity, the cycle can create bottlenecks. Schools need scheduled support, manageable objectives, reusable corrective resources, and ways to prevent additional help from becoming a stigma.
In education, a teacher might identify one essential concept, publish a rubric with examples, teach it through a coherent sequence, and use a brief diagnostic before the next dependency. Learners receive correction matched to their evidence, while peers who are ready investigate an extension problem. A parallel task then checks mastery, and a later transfer task checks durability. AI can propose alternative examples or group error patterns, but teachers must verify accuracy, protect learner data, and decide what evidence is sufficient. The central commitment is equitable opportunity to learn: keep expectations meaningful, respond to evidence quickly, and change the support before concluding that a learner cannot succeed.
