Situated learning treats knowing as connected to the activity, tools, language, relationships, and culture in which it is developed and used. This does not mean that learning happens only in a physical location or that abstract knowledge is unimportant. It means that concepts acquire meaning through participation in recognizable practices. A formula used to interpret evidence in a laboratory, for example, is learned differently from the same symbols copied without a purpose, audience, or standard of judgment.

Lave and Wenger described learning through legitimate peripheral participation. A newcomer begins with limited but genuine access to a community's work, people, artifacts, and conversations. Peripheral does not mean trivial or excluded. It describes a position from which the learner can observe, contribute safely, receive feedback, and gradually take responsibility for more central activity. Participation changes both competence and identity: the learner is not only acquiring facts but becoming someone who can act, communicate, and judge within a practice.

Good situated instruction therefore offers more than a realistic backdrop. Learners need consequential tasks, access to how experienced people reason, and support matched to their current participation. A mentor can model a process, explain decisions, coach performance, and gradually fade assistance. Peers can compare strategies and make tacit conventions discussable. Tools and representations should be used for the purposes they serve in the field. A simulated clinic, design brief, classroom case, or community investigation becomes educationally valuable when learners must interpret conditions, make decisions, justify actions, and respond to authentic feedback.

Authenticity alone is not enough. Workplaces and communities can hide expertise, restrict newcomers, reproduce inequity, or expose learners to risk. An activity can look realistic while leaving students to imitate surface routines without understanding. Teachers must make participation legitimate, safe, inclusive, and intellectually visible. They should identify what learners can decide, which criteria matter, how feedback will be given, and when reflection will connect a local experience with broader concepts. Explicit comparison across cases helps learners see what transfers and what depends on context.

Digital and AI-supported environments can extend participation when they connect learners with real problems, collaborators, records, and expert feedback. They can also simulate authority or complete the meaningful parts of a task before the learner participates. A useful design asks learners to use tools while preserving responsibility for diagnosis, choice, explanation, and revision. Participation records should show what the learner actually attempted, which feedback changed the work, and how responsibility increased across successive tasks. After activity, learners should reconstruct the reasoning, compare it with another setting, and explain how tools and social expectations shaped the result. Situated learning is strongest when access to practice expands over time and learners can both perform within a community and critically understand the practice they are joining.
