Project scores improved with teacher and AI feedback in a structured university course

Valentina Grion, Beatrice Doria, Daniele Agostini, Giorgia Slaviero

Assessment & Evaluation in Higher Education

A University of Padua study compared two AI feedback systems with teacher feedback in a course involving 238 students. Forty-seven project groups entered the final analysis, and average project scores rose from 23.81 to 27.70 out of 30. The study found bounded evidence of comparability between sources, alongside a substantial ceiling effect. Its results concern a shared assessment design and revised projects, rather than proving general interchangeability between teachers and AI.

AI feedback reached student groups, but fewer than one in three actionable comments appeared in their revisions

Guoqing Lu, Huimin Zhang, Shen Ba, Lan Yang

Journal of Educational Computing Research

An 18-week study of 114 pre-service teachers examined what happened after human-reviewed AI feedback reached their groups. Researchers traced 965 actionable comments into later work: 271 were implemented, while many remained unused or ambiguous. The four feedback conditions did not differ significantly in implementation status. The finding directs attention to students’ decisions about advice, with classroom applications below offered as editorial proposals rather than tested improvements in learning.

Adaptive AI feedback improved teachers-in-training’s written justifications, without improving decision accuracy

Computers and Education: Artificial Intelligence

In a randomized study of 269 German teachers-in-training, adaptive GPT-4 feedback produced a small improvement in the justification of a subsequent diagnostic decision compared with a standard expert response. It also led to longer answers and more favorable feedback ratings, but decision accuracy did not improve. The result supports examining different components of professional reasoning separately and does not establish that AI outperforms personalized feedback from a human teacher.

Teachers used AI to develop science lessons, while keeping responsibility for evidence and local relevance

Won Jung Kim

Research in Science Education

A qualitative study of 23 teachers followed AI-assisted science lesson design through surveys, lesson documents, chat logs and instructor notes. Teachers used AI to develop concepts, refine activities and connect environmental learning with student action. They also had to verify claims and repeatedly adapt generic suggestions. The study documents a supervised design process; it does not establish that AI saved preparation time or improved pupils' learning.

AI-supported lesson-design teams maintained immediate scores after withdrawal, but durable learning was not tested

Daniele Agostini, Anna Serbati, Federica Picasso, Anastasiya Lipnevich

Frontiers in Education

A crossover study organized 102 teachers-in-training into 21 lesson-design groups, with complete knowledge-test data from 82 participants. Teams used ChatGPT during either the first or second task. Scores rose during AI-supported phases and did not show a detectable immediate decline after withdrawal for the first sequence. Reflections also described efficiency gains and reduced peer idea-building. Short timing, weak test consistency and sequential tasks prevent interpreting this pattern as established long-term retention.

A twelve-week teacher-education course raised self-reported GenAI literacy across five dimensions

Ting Huang, Chenze Wu, Meixin Wu

Discover Artificial Intelligence

A twelve-week English teacher-education intervention compared four existing university classes, with 45 analyzed participants in each condition. Students receiving explicit GenAI instruction reported higher post-course literacy across technical, critical, communication, creative and ethical dimensions. The course combined practice with reflection and disclosure of AI use. Because the main outcomes came from self-report and classes were not individually randomized, the findings do not demonstrate independent teaching competence or lasting classroom impact.

Product news: Gemini adds selective video analysis, opening a new route to checkable lecture search

Google DeepMind

AI Product and Learning Report

Google announced agentic video understanding on September 1, allowing supported Gemini models to inspect selected moments rather than process a recording only at a fixed rate. The API capability could support lecture search and teacher education, provided returned moments remain checkable. OpenAI's education partnerships and Anthropic's browser tools show parallel interest in assisted workflows, but finding a relevant clip is different from interpreting teaching or measuring learning.

Multilevel AI-assisted feedback supported collaborative regulation, with human review built into delivery

Guoqing Lu, Shen Ba, Lan Yang

Education and Information Technologies

A study of 114 preservice teachers compared four designs for AI-assisted formative feedback during collaborative learning. Feedback addressing task, process, and self-regulation showed advantages on several group outcomes over task-only comments, while adding detail was not uniformly better. A teaching assistant reviewed and delivered the feedback, so the findings concern a supervised instructional workflow rather than students using an autonomous chatbot or AI outperforming teacher feedback.
