Product news: OpenAI's GPT-6 guide treats clear assignments and steering as part of working with agents

A lecturer and two students compare initial and clarified task briefs while updating a decision record beside a simple data table.

OpenAI published a practical guide to the GPT-6 family on October 2, 2026. It covers model selection, clear assignments, long-running work, and preparation for deployment. This is a guidance release for an existing family, not the announcement of another new model. Its educational relevance lies in the relationship between a person's instructions and the evidence needed to judge the work that follows.

The guide encourages users to state the desired result, relevant context, constraints, and completion conditions, while keeping instructions consistent across the workflow. That is a useful starting point for teaching delegation. A request can be detailed yet still leave the central decision unclear. Conversely, a short assignment can be effective when it identifies the purpose and the boundaries that matter.

A research-methods class could compare two requests for the same supplied dataset. One asks for an impressive report; the other identifies the question, allowed transformations, and checks required before interpretation. Students would inspect how the outputs differ and which ambiguities remain. The exercise should not assume that better wording guarantees a correct analysis. It should show how task design makes the resulting work easier to assess.

Longer work also needs a way to respond when circumstances change. A newly discovered error may alter the next step without invalidating every earlier result. Students can practise issuing a correction that states what changes and what remains valid. They should then check whether the assistant applied it to the appropriate work. A message sent during a task is not, by itself, evidence that the task has been corrected.

Anthropic's Sonnet 5.5 release emphasises efficient work on well-defined tasks. Gemini's existing Guided Learning offers support organised around understanding a topic. Alongside OpenAI's guide, these developments suggest that AI literacy includes deciding the form of assistance needed. Sometimes the goal is a checked artifact; sometimes it is an explanation that leaves room for the learner to reason. The assignment should make that difference visible.

For a group project, participants could maintain a brief record of the goal, the evidence currently available, and the unresolved decisions. When they change direction, they would update that record rather than rely on a long sequence of informal messages. A peer could then examine whether the final output reflects the current assignment. For example, a revised deadline should not silently alter the dataset, while a corrected variable definition may require the analysis to be rerun. This provides a practical lesson in coordination that remains useful beyond any one provider's interface.

The guide also treats task success, latency, and cost as things to measure. Educational teams can add a further question: what understanding remains with the person using the assistant? A student might explain a rejected suggestion, reproduce a key check, or adapt the result to a new example. That makes the distinction between effective delegation and successful learning concrete. OpenAI's publication supplies current operational guidance; educators can use it to develop the judgment required to direct and evaluate assistance.

Product news: OpenAI adds Brazilian Portuguese to its educator course, keeping teacher judgment at the centre

OpenAI

AI Product and Learning Report

OpenAI announced a Brazilian Portuguese version of AI for Educators on October 15. The course offers a new language route into professional learning about classroom AI use. This report considers how a teaching team might turn that opportunity into a concrete lesson-design exercise: examine a generated question, explain the instructional choice, and test the activity against students' needs. Course availability is a product announcement, while changes in teaching quality and student learning remain outcomes to investigate.

Product news: Claude Sonnet 5.5 targets faster everyday work, with task boundaries still central to educational use

Anthropic

AI Product and Learning Report

Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 5.5 on September 28, positioning it as a faster, lower-cost complement to Opus 5.5 for well-defined work. The company reports improvements in coding, documents, and communication, with efficiency gains dependent on the task. OpenAI's recently released GPT-6 Sol and Luna and Gemini's course-connected support provide context. Educational teams should evaluate the work they actually need, including the review required before a draft becomes usable.

Product news: Claude Opus 5.5 brings lower-cost research workflows and clearer collaboration

Anthropic

AI Product and Learning Report

Anthropic released Claude Opus 5.5 on September 22, emphasizing stronger coding and knowledge work, clearer communication, and lower operating costs. The same day's GPT-6 Sol and Luna launch broadened the choice of affordable models, while Gemini's established Guided Learning tools offered a contrasting educational purpose. For universities, the opportunity is to compare research workflows carefully while keeping model performance, completed artifacts, and student learning as separate outcomes.
