Product news: ChatGPT Voice adds GPT-Live-1.1 and multilingual voices, raising practical questions for oral practice

OpenAI

AI Product and Learning Report

OpenAI's October 15 update introduces GPT-Live-1.1 and Quip to ChatGPT Voice with additional language-specific voices. Availability varies by region and account. This October 18 report considers a bounded oral-practice activity in which learners choose a useful speaking situation, clarify misunderstandings, and later repeat the task with a person. A more natural voice can change the experience of practice, but neither its accent nor a smooth conversation establishes that the learner's language ability has improved.

Motivational agents changed some algebra-learning choices without a significant overall test advantage

npj Science of Learning

A randomized study analyzed 49 secondary pupils using an adaptive algebra system with or without motivational pedagogical agents. The agent condition showed descriptive gains, but its adjusted post-test advantage and error-rate difference were not significant. Interaction analyses highlighted different choices about optional learning activities and the importance of prior knowledge. The study illustrates why engagement paths deserve attention, while a small sample and 25-minute intervention cannot establish durable benefits from adding an agent.
